    "So far so good" 2010-06-03

Right out of the box this is ready to go. I found the suction cups adhered to my windshield quite well and with a good few wiggles the suctions cups held fast.

For the price, I agree with others about Escort should provide a USB sync cable. I also have been having trouble installing the software for updates. I followed the websites video tutorial exactly (be sure to watch it) and installed the proper Windows updates. ".NET Framework Vs 2.0" that is needed per a message window that pops up. I restart the install but it says it still needs the update. Can anyone help with that?

***EDIT*** This review was written afterhours. The next day I spoke to customer service via live chat on their website, they recommended ".NET Framework vs 3.5 with Service Pack 1". I installed this and the programs installed quickly and were very easy to use. ***END OF EDIT***

On my trip home the detector did pick up the store's alarm systems. This is supposed to be learned after a couple drive by's per consumer and manufacturer reports. Along the way I believe it did pick up a radar gun but I was not able to find out where it came from. It was in a heavy construction area with plenty of hiding spots.

I drove by a known speed camera (no camera, just the "your speed" indicator). The detector picked it up from around a corner to just barely line of site. But if it were a cop, I'm not sure if I would have enough time to react.

It also picked up a red light camera, but they have been disabled for quite some time in my state of Minnesota. Hence why I wanted to do an update of the device. With this experience, I would do the update right away.

Regarding needing to hook it up to a power source: you can get a converter or if you get a detector with serial number starting with "22", as is mine, you will not need it. You can just hook it up via the USB anywhere your computer is. There are countless wifi spots around any major city, including my city with a gov provided network, so those who need the update just need to sit outside their local coffee shop and download the updates. Either that, you can download them to your laptop, then go to your car and install them there. I do not believe you need to have the detector hooked up to your computer/laptop while it is hooked up to the internet at the same time.

I will review the product over the next week and give another update, along with experience with customer service helping with the firmware updates.

    Peace!

"a different kind of radar detector" 2010-05-24

this is a high end Escort detector, so even though its actual radar detecting features are not advertised much compared to the GPS, note that it does what the non-gps high end Escort detectors do. no need to review that part.

I chose this one because I have don't have a speeding problem, I have a speed trap, speed zone problem. the ability to mark and be alerted to my regional traps is what makes this a value. the false alarm warning is a bonus, like other reviewers note, after a while, it's nearly silent which makes you take the few alerts it makes very seriously. I have it set to display speed at all times, handy if you don't trust your car's speedo.

although the docs say it's ready to go out of the box, I did the software update which also lets you read and set options from your PC. I found that Ka and X bands were defaulted off, not a big deal for X but a serious fault for Ka, all our State Troopers use Ka in the area. I advise everyone to turn everything on until you get a feel of what your area police are using. regional updates are not frequent, I haven't been notified for my area yet (two months) and the unit hasn't alerted me to any traps I haven't put in myself (we don't have any traffic light, speed cams in this state, can't comment) so far, but I also haven't gone out of the state with it yet.

others thought the little suction mount clip was cheesy but I think it's just right and holds it without vibration and at the right angle (FYI, we have two German sport sedans). you can bend it to suit your ws. it's small enough to not matter when the detector isn't attached.

I owned an old Uniden radar X/K band detector. It beeped ALL the time. Highway/City was a laugh. Escort finally solved the problem. After a months' use of my 9500ix I can drive all over and not get a false alarm the whole trip. If it beeps, there is only one meaning - traffic enforcement is nearby.

Basically, high end radar detectors have come a long ways - let me explain why I like this so much.

First off, it's MUCH more than an radar "detector" - its a spectrum analyzer. Picture these two scenarios:

#1 I'm driving home past that speed sign with the big LED display which uses K-band radar on 24.145 Ghz and my old uniden clunker goes off with a K-band alert. Yea, I know - the sign is there and I'm doing 35 in a 25. 100 feet past the sign is a Harley with red and blue lights who is also operating in the K band on 24.168 Ghz. My uniden can't tell the difference. It's a detector, not a spectrum analyzer, It lights the K light and beeps, job done, and hopefully I get a warning, but since the sign is 2 blocks from my house I ignore it and get to meet and greet one of our fine traffic enforcement officers.

#2 I have my 9500ix installed now. It knows where I am thanks to the onboard GPS. It knows the streetsign is on 24.145 GHz. Up till now it doesn't beep. But then there's the Harley up ahead operating on 24.168 Ghz. He's not supposed to be here! Full blast alarm comes out of the radar detector and I go for the anti-lock brakes down to 24 mph before the harley can lock on my signal.

Because I've become accustomed to not getting false alarms ALL the time I take my 9500ix seriously.

Try another scenario. Up ahead the light is turning yellow. Without my 9500ix I might be tempted to try and "make it on yellow" - but this light has a red light camera w/ $283 fine. It's in the 9500ix's database of driving hazards, so long before I see the yellow, my 9500ix cautions me about the camera, and I decide to stop on yellow. No radar detector can do that.

Finally, because my 9500ix can be customized to give you the frequency of the alert (like the 24.168 Ghz Harley radar speed enforcement device above) I've started to get to know my local police by the frequency they use. Those streetsigns (I have 4 within 1500 feet of my house) are just there to drive everyone batty who has a radar detector until they get careless. That does not happen with the 9500ix after its programmed.

*IF* my 9500ix goes off, there is a good reason for it, and I check the display to see the frequency since the strength is indicated by the beeps. I have my cheat sheet of what cities use what frequency for their radar and can tell quickly if they are operating in the area.

In total, including the driver warning bands, the 9500ix receives 8 bands, I run with highway sensitivity and all bands turned on without a single false alarm. A popular option is to shut off X band since so few police departments use it but since I have locked out all X band interferance sources I'm not concerned. Who knows - somewhere out there an X band radar unit may have my name on it.

A side effect of those automatic speed signs setting off everyone's radar detector is that the police can leave their vehicle units in the lock on position, which is where we want them. The police figure people will ignore it or give up entirely with a radar sign on every block, but in reality they are just a 2 mile beacon alerting you to a speed trap nearby.

The old road and track sensitivity reports that showed brand A to sense a radar transmitter 100 feet sooner than brand B are worthless too now. I'd much rather have ALL false alarms removed so when I get an alert, match frequencies, I *KNOW* there is speed enforcement in the area than an extra 100 feet which is a fraction of a second.

As for long term maintenance, I just take my laptop and usb cable out to save my personal noise emitters to disk and get on the internet to upload the latest non-radar threats to my unit as they come about.

While the 9500ix commands a high price, its feature set is well worth it. Combining GPS and a fine microwave spectrum analyzer produces the ultimate traffic safety device.

    "V1's CONSTANT FALSES+No Red Light/Photo Camera Det why I'm now using a 9500ix" 2010-05-03
By Vote 'em Out '10+'12! (EVERYWHERE)
No surprise V1 still has no GPS, no Red Light Camera nor Photo Camera Detection Capability....And the radar false positives were driving me crazy!

But now I have the Escort Passport 9500ix and my drives from Georgia to North Carolina are peaceful again. Highly recommend it and I LOVE being able to plug it in and get INSTANT Red Camera/Photo Camera Data Updates and Software Updates--I'm not stuck having to send my unit in for software updates anymore.....

Initially, I was considering the V1, but when I found out about how often it gives you false alarms, I decided to get the 9500ix instead. The beauty of this detector is the TrueLock feature, which removes false alarms and prevents me from being desensitized, because I only get alarms when it matters. Sure, the learning period is annoying, but even without truelock, it is remarkably quiet. Apparently, the digital signal processing rejects most false signals. I have not had a chance to test the redlight and speedcam detection, but I would not rely too much on it, because even though it uses the DEFENDER database, which is the best, there are still probably locations that it does not know about. A word of caution: DO NOT buy from bestseller21. He is on the Unauthorized reseller list, which means the warranty maybe void if you buy from him.
